    VX1000 Blue Haze

you can buy a lens hood, don't shoot into the sun, and shoot at a smaller aperture like f5.6/f8. I think yours has bad coating on it which is making it flare easily but you can avoid it by choosing different angles that don't make it flare. also white balance on a light blue and play with the wb shift to get a warmer image which could combat this too. your overall image seems to be blue. If you really want to fix it in post you can use curves adjustments and take blue out/put red and green into the shadows. also if youre using premiere you can desaturate just the blues in the curves tab of lumetri color on the hue saturation curve.
  2. The shittier the better because I have a MK1 screw that I can replace the elements with (or trade you lens for lens). Only been able to find brand new fisheye's for $1000+ CAD.

    SONY VX1000 ARE DYING?

Oh yeah no doubt there's tons of terrible filmers that learned on dslr cameras and are getting a vx for the clout. There's a whole cult behind the vx and just owning one doesn't matter. 'When I asked Wolfe what he thought of kids filming with VX1000s today, he said he sometimes wishes the camera would die. “It’s like, are you really buying a camera to make a video, or are you buying it to make a statement and have an accessory?” Fortunately, filmers like Panebianco, Garshell, and a handful of other VX1000 disciples are making sure the camcorder keeps its cred.' http://www.jenkemmag.com/home/2018/07/13/tracing-history-skateboardings-most-famous-camera/

    skater skating

Lighting is really nice, no bad shadows, he stands out against the darkness, and your eye goes directly to him (could burn ht e left side a bit). the slight amount of motion blur looks really nice and the tilt works for the body language of the skater. Looks like it needs some chromatic aberration correction though. Bonus is a little flat. Might help with some dodging and burning on the skater or a high contrast b&w grade.

    SONY VX1000 ARE DYING?

I've been filming with vx's for over 10 years. That second clip is in China (smog) and probably has a dirty lens. I had my vx serviced by Kerry from Video Electronics this year (which included a full lens assembly cleaning) and my footage looks in between the two. The footage from Jim has definitley had the blacks taken down or contrast increased, there's no doubt about it. This is from a long time vx filmer and experienced colour grader's opinion. The best part of the vx is the dynamic range it has compared to it's other Mini DV counterparts, which in turn has not the less contrasty footage. Look at any other video on DVD from the same era you're referencing and it won't look the same. Jim has just given a little polish to his footage (Upres and contrast/sharpening) before uploading. I set my sharpness to full in camera but I even output sharpen and upres, but its not what the footage looks like off the tape.

    SONY VX1000 ARE DYING?

this has been colour corrected, sharpened and upres'd to 1080p so it's no wonder it looks like this. VX1000's don't get these colours straight off the camera. yes some people have dirtier internal lenses and fisheyes but it doesn't mean the quality of the cameras deteriorate over time.

    cool shots.

    land on my face

holy shit, ballsy angles! that trick on that spot is crazy. i was told be elkin its a crust spot but looks like you found a new way to skate it. i would just use some chromatic aberration reduction in the lens corrections tab of lightroom and its perfect. arms, timing, colors are all 👌

    Resizing edited footage for DVD?

no dvd's you want the original size. if it was bluray you would want to resize and deinterlace it but keep it at its original size keep it interlaced.

    Two In The Chest

get closer, lower try to keep framing consistent (especially in lines they're going left and right in the frame) turn off the manual audio, auto is always better board shows up in the shot sometimes make sure all lenses are clean turn up sharpness all the way in the custom presets upres to at least 720p for youtube

    Berkeley Montage (4:3 HD)

just going to list them out as i see them. watch out for hands/boards in the shot. i tend to hold onto my shirt with my hand thats not filming focus on the stability and then maybe zoom in post (use ease in ease out too) unless you get a zoom with a real servo. also warp stabilizer at a low setting like 1-5% can be a huge help. noticed some autoexposure and auto white blance going on, make sure thats locked. also sounds like auto audio, do some tests at a skatepark to find what audio level you like montage was fun though! good pacing and skating. could have cut some clips out here and there to make it shorter and the best of the best, but i know its hard to cut out the homies clips at first. but you have to do whats best for the edit sometimes. keep killing it!

    Feeble Pop Out

colour scheme is on point!. the lines and even that arrow go with the direction of the skater. only thing id add to it would be some dodging here and there to create some separation of the right leg and maybe on the shadow side of the face. only thing that kills it is the comic sans font haha. props on keeping the hassyfish alive! that setup, minus the film, is a huge investment.

    what's up with your website?

love freeloveoneteaspoon and sweet-dream! I feel that you can have both if you want. if a series stands out on its own then you can separate it. as an artist with series you would have those galleries, and for clients looking to hire you maybe have more commercial galleries that are easier for them to ingest to get a quick idea of what youre about. or have just one portfolio that is a best of all of your photos for that reason instead of portraiture, landscape, etc. killing it tho!

    what's up with your website?

don't see a point in writing the camera you used (a7r) and the portrait of your girlfriend stood out (in a bad way, because there were no other portraits). you should try to separate the initial emotional experience of shooting and edit your work down to the best of the best.

    April.

Yeah this is definitely a look best saved for b-roll/cutaway/intro shots.

    The Large Format Thread

friend had borrowed a sinar rail camera from school and they finally asked for it back after months LOL EDIT: clarification, he's been graduated for 2 years now and they've took out shooting 4x5 from their curriculum at least 4 years ago. first year when i was there was 4x5 black and white with some digital and 2nd year colour theory and business (simplifying obviously)

    Site Issues

Is there any way to optimize the site to load faster? like emptying the cache up in this bitch? i feel like something is slowing it down because its not my internet. maybe its how feature rich the site is? or some old threads need to be archived or deleted? doing awesome work steve! glad to be back.

John Young Gems 2018 - Contest Edit

what i meant by make it look its best is that its super exciting and scary to do tricks sometimes! so put that energy into the filming as much as the skater does, channel their energy and it'll also be exciting for the viewer. these angles were steady but just kind of, 'okay that happened'.

John Young Gems 2018 - Contest Edit

reminded me of a thrasher skatepark meet up video and what i mean by that is that it was good but predictable. i know this was a contest but it was very document-y. skateparks are where you experiment with filming, try new things, because you can fuck up and its not that big of a deal and you learn a lot. just force yourself out of the mold sometimes and film a trick to make it look its best. also wasn't into the font choice. okay song. hope this helps!

    LUCY - Montage

lol im guessing its because sp has the word forums in it but thats funny. your shutter speeds are way too slow and the lens was often filthy (gotta check the camera, and front and back of the mark 1). songs were good, vibes of the homies were fun too, but theres a lot that could be finessed. just like general shakiness that can be helped through practice and planning out the shots with your skaters. also the slow shutter b-roll stuff worked sometimes but not every time. your light doesn't seem bright enough especially to be filming something like at 1:38 but it was probably off the cuff filming (this is where not using that clip comes in, video could be half the length and 2x better). skipped to the end of the video and saw more of the same kind of stuff i was talking about. another gripe is that the footage is really blue. hope you take some of this to heart but its just my opinion too and im not perfect. hope to see more in the future! on the right path
