Opendns:faster And Safer

Recommended Posts

First off, i'd like to tell you right now that this does not require you to install ANYTHING. All it does is change the dns servers your computer connects to, adding a few handy features as well as improved speed and security.

Win Xp:

Select "Control Panel" from the Start menu.

Click "Network Connections" from the "Control Panel" choices..

Choose your connection from the "Network Connections" window..

Click "Properties" button.

Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click "Properties."

Click the radio button "Use the following DNS server addresses" and type in OpenDNS addresses in the "Preferred DNS server" and "Alternate DNS server" fields, then click "OK".

Restart your computer.

Servers: Preferred: Alternative:

Mac OSX:

Select "System Preferences..." from the Apple menu.

Click "Network" from the "Internet & Network" row.

Select Your Connection

Click "Configure..." button at the bottom of the screen.

Type in OpenDNS addresses in the "DNS Servers" field..

Restart your computer.
Servers : (Same As The Ones For Windows)

Visit http://welcome.opendns.com/ to test your new settings. You Should see this:

If you see the Oops page, please try two more tests, in case the Welcome page was improperly cached.

First, visit our demonstration site internetbadguys.com.
If you
were successful in switching to OpenDNS, it should be blocked as a
phishing site. Otherwise, it will tell you that it's a demonstration

Second, make a deliberate typo in the TLD, like craigslist.og and see if it resolves to craigslist.org. If you are using OpenDNS,
you will be taken to the classifieds site. If you are not, you will get your default browser error page.
Still not working? You may need to restart your web browser and/or router.

I'm doing the Mac version of your "how to" thing. I can't find the Configure button, but I typed "OpenDNS" into the DNS Server field, and clicked apply, and it just gave me an error message, saying that

"The IP address must consist of 4 numbers from 0 to 255, separated by periods."

Could you clarify what an OpenDNS actually does?

EDIT: nvm... i got everything to work. no reboot necessary on Mac. I don't really see that much of a difference, but i guess it fixes that little irritating "craigslist.og" typo. Lol, thanks though.
