ok, thanks.

how do they get hacked?

i tried getting cutenews but i didnt know how to change the "chmods" things?
They get hacked because the code isn't secure. People find loopholes and flaws and exploit them, because they have nothing better to do.

Cutenews is easy to install, to chmod a file/folder, basically connect to the server in FTP, right click and either click CHMOD or Info or Permissions or something, it'll be like that. Heres a link for more info: http://catcode.com/teachmod/

Where are you publishing/uploading to? Sounds like your host doesn't support PHP or it isn't enabled, which is odd.

EDIT: Also, it might have something to do with GoLive and its FTP browser, but I'm not sure, I've never used GoLive. Try out Cyberduck FTP or Fetch FTP.

If its not already installed, talk to your host and have them install it for you.

Just a simple test (this won't run if you don't have php installed, obviously):
<?php
phpinfo();
?>
so you made a page with a .php extension and put that code in there? and then uploaded the .php page onto your server? and nothing showed up? if so, then you don't have PHP.
you need to talk to your host and see if you can get PHP.

When it says
Now You must CHMOD the the directory cutenews/data/ and all files and
folders under the data/ directory must be also chmod'ed to 777.
What do you CHMOD the other files that aren't in data/ directory to?

You shouldn't have to, just leave them at the defaults.

All right, thanks. I finally uploaded cutenews up onto my site, without using FTP ;)

someone wanna give me a rundown on joomla?

i'm looking for something free, very customizable (think expression engine), capable of users, commenting, photo/video upload

commenting entries shown on the homepage without viewing the article is also a plus

thank you!

we use a lot of joomla where i work.

it's really nice for all that you said, and has a ton of plug-ins and extensions for everything really.

as far as customization, you pretty much have to download a template and go from there, but everything is really customizeable inside of that.

there's also this site : http://www.joomlatemplatebuilder.com where you can create a basic joomla layout to further customize.
I found a very nice free CMS from lurking. Its called CushyCMS. It's not bad and it makes it mega simple for clients and such.

This is pretty impressive, I think I could end up using it for clients at some point.

Has anyone tried Gelato? I was looking into it and I couldn't install it for some reason... I made a username and such but it didn't work when I went to index... Just wondering if anyone used it. http://gelatocms.com/
