what an origianl idea you have to use a vhs look. oh... wait...

nah for real though if you wanna make it looks legit make your edit, then play it back through the camera hooked up to a recording VCR onto a VHS tape. then essentially do the opposite and play the vhs tape in the vcr hooked up to camera to computer, that way it will be as legit as you can get it. also you will have a sick vhs copy of your edit

well yes but is it possible to do something with vhs damages through after effects?

it would be pretty hard to do it in after effects only. im sure theres some plugs to make it work but the easiest way is just to find some stock and just mess around with it

get a local store to transfer it to vhs, or find a tutorial how, then transfer back to the computer (do it with your raw footage not the edit). then fuck the tape up, play it hundreds of times, spit on it, put it in the microwave (oven is less sketchy) just fuck it up. then scan it again. buuutttt, too bad someone already did this and its called the vhs tape.

he did that ^^^ and used the fuckups to enhance the edit by using it in keypoints in the songs (although he might of overkilled it, the skating and filming and music is amazing)

Theres a few things you can do. If you just want to add a few effects to the video as a transition then just pop in a vhs tape that you have crinckled up and record the tv. It turns out pretty good if you know how to use the channel modes in after effects. You could also transfer you video to vhs like the other people said but theirs a pretty sick technique where you take the top part of the vcr off and put a magnet close to one of the heads where the tape is moving. That will make a raw distortion to the tape but not permanently mess it up.

You could do it in after effects like you want but it;s going to look animated and unreal. In editing sometimes you have to make the effects with raw materials the ol' fashioned way.
