your best bet for a fisheye would be the manybrand 7.5mm for the gh4

I saw a canon 8-15 with a metabones speed booster on the gh4 and it was so stinkin sick. But that was in 4k and i know the crop is different than 1080.

That is not a metabones booster, it is a generic ebay one where the aperture cannot be controlled, so you are stuck with shooting at f4 with the 8-15mm fisheye. The 4k crop is more than the 1080p crop, however that was no problem as you could balance things out by zooming in or out with the 8-15mm fisheye. Things are more problematic with the Nikon speedbooster and Samyang 8mm, nobody has done any tests to show what it looks like, how much vignetting there is etc, you can't control the vig as you would with the 8-15mm. It could potentially look really sick, just quite risky.

Your safe bet would be the 7.5mm m43 fisheye, it's less wide than it's Canon/Nikon counterparts, but much smaller, sharper wide open, the focus ring actually does something, and definitely wide enough to film with.

Thank you for your answers.

i used to film on a samyang 8mm on a 7d. i'm looking for the same fov while filming in 4k.

i'm going to a shop tonight and im gonna do a few tests before buying one of the lenses (rokinon 7.5, or nikon samyang 8mm).

I'll share it here for sure.

Allright, I just come back from the store where i tested it out quickly, nothing really accurate.

GH4 (4K) + Rokinon :

GH4 (4K) + Speedbooster nikon G + Samyang 8mm (new series) :

I also looked at both lenses in 1080p, there's no vignetting.
There might be a few vignetting in photo mode with the speedbooster + samyang.

So as you can see, it's more effective with the speedbooster and samyang, which I'm gonna buy tomorrow.

Thanks a lot of the tests, so in 1080p mode on the gh4, there is STILL no vignetting with the Samyang despite it already being so wide even in 4k?? Could you please post 1080p comparisons if you go to the shop again? This is looking like a really really good fisheye option, even better if no vignetting in 4:3 photo mode, wish I had the money to change now.

I think it's a go to if you're willing to use it in 1080p and 4k. Maybe there is a better option if you're willing to use only 4K.

I know you guys are interested in the Samyang lens but I thought I would share this video with you guys that I filmed in 1080p mode with the GH4 + Generic Speed Booster + Canon 8-15mm.

I feel like this combo on the GH4 is much wider than the Samyang which I used both versions the M43 7.5mm on the GH3 and I also used the EF Mount 8mm on the Canon 7D back in the day. I come from filming with a VX1000 and I have found that no other lens compares to the width of this combo when filming in HD besides the Century Xtreme which is too heavy for me and the Peleng 8mm which has a lot of crazy flares but I loved the width.

A normal aps-c sensor such as the 7d or a Nikon d5300 has a crop of 1.5 or 1.6, the nikon speedbooster converts the micro 4/3rds sensor into a 1.4x which makes the Samyang wider, but still with no vignetting. Also, does the generic ef speedbooster allow aperture control? It would not matter with the Samyang because the aperture is changed on the lens, and of course there is no vignetting on the Samyang even with the speedbooster for those who don't like vignetting, the Canon 8-15mm would probably be of the same vertical width as the Samyang+speedbooster had it been zoomed in to the point of no vignetting.

That being said, if you can still control the aperture of the 8-15mm with the generic ef booster on the gh4, then it is without a doubt the best option, as you can shoot super wide both in 4k and 1080p, and the glass quality is top notch. However it is way out of the price range for most people like myself. The samyang+Nikon m4/3 speed booster is the better value and more affordable option.

TonyZ, I completely follow you on that.

Canon 8-15mm seems great anyway, and i think speedbooster developping a model for canon with control of the aperture. It has been announced for BMCC and I hope it will be for MFT too.

I come from a vx1000 background and even wider vx2100+mk1. I like the vigneting of the vx1000, and vigneting in 4/3 in general. but i dont l'ike it in 16/9. personal taste.

Also here we are talking about the nikon mount samyang 8mm, for aps-c + speedbooster, not the 7.5mm for MFT. I tested both on one of my first posts, and sure the 7.5mm is not wide.

GH4 (4K) + Rokinon/samyang 7.5mm :

GH4 (4K) + Speedbooster nikon G + Samyang 8mm nikon mount (new series) :

I used the samyang and peleng 8mm on a 7d before (which seems to be the same glass, lens hood making the difference for the flares), and this setup (gh4 + speedbooster + samyang 8mm nikon mount) seems to be just a touch wider in 1080p, lees in 4k for sure.

If it's even wider than the Peleng then it seems like the perfect solution, hopefully we will be able see some test foot soon.

allright here is a first test.

no fancy grading, just contrast. no good skating. just a test. slow mo is 1080p. real speed is 4k downconverted to 1080 in post.

obviously i need to find a way to attach my mic somewhere else too.
